Houghton Wesleyan Church has served this community since its founding in 1852, just nine years after the Wesleyan Methodists separated from the Methodist Episcopal Church over opposition to slavery and in favor of more democratic church government. In all these years this historic church has been the only one in the village of Houghton.

unity within diversity

We celebrate our unity within diversity. This varied Houghton congregation includes all ages—newborns to senior citizens, people from many different denominational backgrounds, and people experienced in a wide range of worship styles. Our worship services reflect the multi-denominational makeup of the congregation by offering Sunday morning worship services that are distinct in style yet with the same message: God makes us one body in Christ.

student centered

Houghton Church is student-oriented, serving Houghton College, Houghton Academy, and many area public school students. Our church staff includes a senior pastor, an assistant pastor, a youth pastor, a discipleship pastor, and a music and worship director.

Many people use their gifts in many different ways to serve in the Body of Christ at Houghton: Teaching Sunday School classes or Wednesday evening children’s classes; or taking senior citizens to the nutrition site; leading a Bible study class in the county jail; visiting the sick and shut-ins and showing hospitality are just a few of the ways this body of believers in Houghton serve each week. We worship and we work together. We invite you to pray for us and join with us
