A series of recitals listed below celebrate the completion of the church's organ. We hope that you will be able to attend the events as we honor all who have given in support of the project and even more, as we give thanks to God for the miraculous completion of this instrument that we pray will bring glory to God and inspiration for years to come.

Friday, November 14, 2008, 8:00 p.m.
James Higdon, Professor of Organ and Director of the Division of Organ and Church music at the University of Kansas, and internationally esteemed concert organist and teacher, held his first organ teaching position briefly during the 1970s at Houghton College.
His recital will feature a work for organ and flute by Jehan Alain.

Friday, January 16, 2009, 8:00 p.m.
Elizabeth Claar, Houghton alumna (class of 1992), holds the Doctor of Musical Arts in Organ Performance from the University of Michigan. She serves as Organist at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and directed the July 2008 AGO Region V Pipe Organ Encounter at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

Friday, February 13, 2009, 8:00 p.m.
Timothy Smith, Organist at First Congregational Church in Columbus, Ohio, is also director of the Portageville Chapel, a newly-restored retreat for organists in nearby Portageville, NY. Smith will perform a setting of the “Magnificat” by the early French composer J. A. Guilain with assistance from a local men’s choir.

Friday, March 20, 2009, 8:00 p.m.
Judy Congdon, Professor of Organ and College Organist at Houghton College, will play an all-Bach recital in celebration of Bach’s 323rd birthday.

Sunday, April 19, 2009, 6:00 p.m.
Hymn Festival will feature the Houghton College Choir along with the choirs of Houghton Wesleyan Church in a service of celebration and thanksgiving through congregational song.
